Recessionista Supersize Me!

Purchase info: Buy it here.

We recessionistas really like maxi dresses — especially ones that are as lovely as this design from Swell.com! Available for $59, the floor-length dress covers the entire leg — no slits — and it’s in a nice, soft jersey fabric to keep you cool. The colors are a subtle tie-dye and the dress is empire waisted with a pretty ruffle.

Lauren Conrad and Kate Hudson like the really pricey ones and they’re lovely for them, but for a summer piece, we’ll take this. We also love the length, which is suitable for ladies of all heights. If you’re adventurous, this can be a transition piece and can be worn and wide-belted with a loose cardigan or one of those basic layering tops. Pull on a boot or a clog and you’re all set for Fall!

Ex-Syracuse hoops coach’s wife Life is ruined

”It would be ironic if Ms. Fine is allowed to pursue her lawsuit claiming she was defamed when Bobby Davis was not permitted to pursue his defamation case,” she said in an email statement.

Laurie Fine’s lawyer, Lawrence Fisher of Pittsburgh, repeatedly declined to answer specific questions and said he was discussing the complaint with Bristol, Conn.-based ESPN. He has not yet filed a lawsuit.

Fisher called the district attorney’s comments on Davis’ and Lang’s credibility ”irrelevant, immaterial, unsubstantiated and foolish.”

”Bernie does support this lawsuit, and he’s behind me 100 percent,” Laurie Fine said.

Laurie Fine, with her two daughters at her side, said her husband called to wish her luck Wednesday. She would not address whether they are still together.

”I’m here today as a wife and a mother who has had to endure the trauma of being smeared in the public as a monster,” she said, reading quickly from a statement. ”My life has been destroyed.”

GENEVA, N.Y. (AP) The wife of fired Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine claimed Wednesday that ESPN maliciously trampled her reputation by broadcasting salacious stories about her and about claims that her husband molested ball boys.

”She can’t even go to Wegmans,” said Fisher, referring to a local supermarket chain.

Davis initially approached ESPN in 2003, but the network did not report the story then.

ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said the complaint is without merit and the network stands by its reporting.

Fisher said ESPN should apologize, retract the stories and ”be punished for willful, wanton, reckless disregard for the reputation and the truth of Laurie Fine.” He called it ”a textbook example of defamation in the world of journalism.”

Bernie Fine has denied wrongdoing and hasn’t been charged. Federal investigators opened an investigation into him following the allegations of a third man, 23-year-old Zach Tomaselli of Lewiston, Maine, who has since said he lied. The local prosecutor has called Davis and Lang credible but said the alleged crimes occurred too long ago to pursue.

Fine said the network was motivated by the unfolding child sex-abuse scandal at Penn State University.

”Although these defendants have known me to be a decent and honorable woman, they have maliciously attacked me in order to attack my husband and to boost television ratings in the wake of the Penn State scandal,” she said.

Laurie Fine held a news conference Wednesday and threatened to file a libel lawsuit in federal court against the cable network and two employees. ESPN in November broke the story of two former Syracuse ball boys, Robert Davis and Michael Lang, who claimed they were molested by Bernie Fine decades ago.

Davis’ lawyer, Gloria Allred, said if Laurie Fine does sue ESPN, she anticipates Davis will be called to testify. Last week, a Syracuse-area judge dismissed defamation suit by Davis and Lang against Boeheim and the university. Allred said she will appeal.

Laurie Fine said she was the victim of ”treacherous lies” and said the attention has forced her to live in seclusion for the past six months and give up charity work she enjoyed.

Fisher said the media coverage has made it ”impossible” for Laurie Fine to go out in public in her hometown, so they held the news conference in Geneva, a Finger Lakes resort town 45 miles west of Syracuse. The family has also put their suburban Syracuse home on the market.

”They should apologize and retract these horrible lies reported about me,” she said.

The accusations from Davis and Lang, quickly picked up by other national media, roiled the Syracuse team’s then-perfect season and brought criticism to Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim. Boeheim initially called Davis a liar out to capitalize on the Penn State scandal, but soon softened his stance.

A Sea Of Handbags

After designers Sean Monahan and Monica Paolini landed their New York-based contemporary women’s line, Sea, in stores, retailers like Barneys could hardly keep the label’s patterned silk sets and leopard-print pieces on the racks. This month, the duo gives us more to love with their new line of handbags.

“We wanted our bags to have the look our customers have come to expect from the ready-to-wear collection,” Monahan tells Style.com. “Hopefully, they are quite functional, easy, but fun to wear, with a spirited and optimistic personality.”

The bags are all of those things; they are, like the clothes, slightly edgy yet at the same time feminine and sophisticated. There are 17 styles for all different functions, from clutches to hobos to messengers, in the same stretch printed canvas from the clothing line, bubble lamb, and calf leather. Our favorites, of course, are the leopard-print numbers, including the Penelope shoulder bag ($495) and the Mayfair shopper ($475).

Sea handbags will be available January 15 at The Tannery.

Opening Ceremony Takes On London

Photo: Joe Schildhorn / BFAnyc.com

It looks like there will be more than one opening ceremony at the upcoming London Olympics. Today, WWD reports that New York-based retailer Opening Ceremony is temporarily setting up shop at 31-31 King Street just before the 2012 Olympics get under way. The 3,000-square-foot pop-up shop, housing O.C.’s ready-to-wear line and collections from Olympia Le-Tan to Maison Michel, a debut Adidas x Opening Ceremony collection, and exclusive Olympic pieces from the likes of Proenza Schouler, Pamela Love, and Chloë Sevigny, will be followed by the brand’s first shop in Europe, opening in the fall (also reportedly on King Street).

“In the last ten years since we first opened our doors on Howard Street in New York, Opening Ceremony has expanded to Los Angeles and Tokyo, but we have had our hearts set on London since the beginning. Covent Garden is an historic, global shopping destination and we’re looking forward to what Opening Ceremony will add to its exciting future,” O.C. founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim (pictured) say. Also on the horizon: a Topshop “sport-inspired” collection, due to launch in July.

In Paris, Flower Children On Parade

Photo: Courtesy of Valentino

Hothouse blooms and leafy plants are springing up everywhere at the Paris men’s shows (and not just because Louis Vuitton showed Kim Jones’ first collection in their usual sultry greenhouse space in the 15th). Bold print has been one of the hallmarks of the season since Prada, Versace, and D&G went maximal in Milan, but here in Paris, there’s a floral cast. For their second men’s collection for Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli reimagined camouflage as an army green palm tree print—a Hawaiian in disguise, literally. (It fit in nicely with the odd resurgence of tropical chic, from Opening Ceremony and Reyn Spooner’s new collab to Stella McCartney’s Resort womenswear to Jean Paul Gaultier’s floral bermuda shorts and full-on Hawaiian tux. Christophe Lemaire, too, screened oversize flowers, borrowed from a midcentury print, on blouson jackets and slouchy pajama-style pants. It remains to be seen whether the purple blossoms Riccardo Tisci grew for Givenchy’s Fall ‘11 womenswear collection will reappear tonight at his men’s show, or whether Lemaire’s new green thumb will carry over into his second Hermès collection.
